Services

Infectious diseases remain the number one killer of human beings in the world as we enter the new millennium. Our role is to help in the prevention, as well as, the treatment of patients who have infections of all and any type. Our range of expertise varies from HIV disease through prevention of travel diseases. We see patients with influenza, pneumonia, bone infections, heart valve infections, urinary tract infections, wound infections, fevers that have not resolved and many other types of infections.

We also provide advice to hospitals in terms of infection control programs and appropriate use of antimicrobial agents, particularly to try to prevent the development of resistant bacteria.

HIV Care
In conjunction with our physicians, we have designed an outreach program specifically for those individuals who have contracted HIV and AIDS. Through outreach , AIDS patients receive practical help as well as psychological support to assist them through critical periods of their illness. A nurse and social worker combine efforts to educate and facilitate problem solving important HIV-related issues. A full range of services are provided both in terms of medical care as well as obtaining social services and entitlements available and appropriate counseling, education, dietary consultations and a full range of ancillary services available at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).

Hospital Epidemiology
Under the direction of Cristina E. Cicogna, M.D. the Hospital Epidemiology program actively performs services necessary for hospital outbreaks of infections, resistant bacteria, and a surveillance program, to name just a few. This Division is pro-active and an integral part to the medical center.

Hepatitis
Infectious Diseases and gastroenterologist specialists at HUMC have collaborated to form Hepatitis Associates. This group is dedicated to the treatment of both hepatitis B and C. State of the art treatment options, including the most recent research protocols are available for appropriate patients.

IV Therapy Management
Our physicians provide expert management of IV (intravenous) antibiotic therapy given in the home, in skilled nursing facilities, in outpatient settings (like HUMC outpatient infusion center) and in the hospital. This treatment is for certain infectious diseases that require long term treatment such as osteomyelitis and endocarditis.

Under the direction of Jerome F. Levine, M.D. and Mary Lamontagne, RN, CRNI, the Hackensack University Medical Center Outpatient Infusion Center has been in operation for three (3) years. This state-of-the-art facility is available for the out-patient therapy of intravenous antibiotics as well as other parenteral compounds, such as, IV gammaglobulin and Remicade. The facility is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide intravenous therapy under a controlled setting with IV certified R.N.'s.
